Carex remota
Remote Sedge
Description
This fine-textured, bright green sedge is one of my top five meadow grasses, especially for smaller gardens. Durable, dependable and year-round good looking, it's the perfect sedges for shady meadows. In smaller gardens, it is the 'just right' meadow sedge by virtue of its height: not too low and not too high.
It seems to be the visual icon of what most people think of when they imagine a meadow. It is far too underutilized and deserves far greater use, especially in smaller gardens where overhead trees render the existing lawn in poor condition. The lustrous bright green foliage of Carex remota is best in some shade. Full hot sun will bleach the foliage a more yellowy green.
Carex remota is so versatile. Use in groups, massed, or interplant as a filler to create openings for bulbs. Combines with just about anything, great in tropical settings or with ferns in woodland settings. A great neutral design element, it's often used as a blending component in the meadows I make.
