Ajuga reptans 'Texas Tough'
Suntough Carpet Bugle
Description
This low growing perennial groundcover is one of my favorite flowering spring accents for shady meadows. While most of the popular Aguja's have purple or multi-colored leaves, this selection has glossy green leaves that blend with the grasses and the sedges as it weaves among them. Texas Tough has showy dark blue purple flowers that are held on narrow vertical spikes in the spring. The flower attract pollinators and its dense mats are effective used on meadow edges and as a filler between larger clumping grasses.
Texas Tough is good in containers and bioswales. It's not picky about soils and grows in sun or shade but needs more moisture in full sun. Our plants came from Scott Ogden who collected it in Lake Charles Louisiana, and road tested it in his Austin TX gardens. We have learned many times over, that Scott Ogden and his wife Lauren Springer Ogden know how to pick plants!
