Project Overview
This small site is located on a busy intersection. The client was an accomplished musician and wanted a place to play outdoors while enjoying the garden. She didn't have a garage, so we reorganized the patio and helped design a trellis that could be used as a covered space for gathering and music or a carport when the car was inside the garden.
The Phoenix canariensis palm is a common feature of early Californian Mediterranean gardens, like this one. We added unusual small-scale palms to visually relate the existing historic palm to the lower plane of the garden. Our plantsmanship allows for us to design with rare species and honor the historic nature of this garden with an eclectic meadow of palms and cycads.
We created privacy with various hedges and fast-growing evergreen cypress in a way felt intimate, not restricting and also gave the neighbors something beautiful to enjoy. The meadow is an ever changing canvas of bulbs, annuals, and perennials that fluctuate seasonally. Paths that conceal and reveal as they direct you through the garden 'rooms' make the space feel bigger than it actually is.
